After watching X-Men ’97 Episode 5, “Remember It,” people were left asking the fates of two crucial members of the team. Who dies in the episode and what happened to Magneto and Gambit? Here’s everything you need to know.
Does Magneto die in X-Men ’97 Episode 5?
The episode implied that Magneto died. But it’s possible that he survived and will be back in future episodes.
The celebrations of Genosha becoming a United Nations country were interrupted by a Sentinel army attack. It led to countless mutants dying, with only a few surviving. In the final act, it came down to the “Godzilla Sentinel” vs. the X-Men members.
Magneto was the first to fight the prime Sentinel. He managed to hold back its energy beam using his electromagnetic abilities. But eventually, the beam broke through his defenses, causing a huge explosion.
Following that, the Sentinel exclaimed, “Omega threat eliminated.” This implies that both Magneto and Leech, who was holding him at the time, died from the blast. However, their bodies were never shown, leaving episode 6 to answer the question of their fates.
It’s worth noting the Sentinel failed to detect the pulse of another mutant later in the episode. So, it’s possible that Magneto somehow survived the blast by shielding himself at the very last second.
In the comics, an attack on Genosha seemingly killed him. But he was smuggled away to shelter by his followers and returned after healing from his wounds later. So, that could happen in X-Men ’97 as well, with one of the Morlocks carrying him to an underground shelter.
Does Gambit die at the end of X-Men ’97 Episode 5?
Gambit likely died at the end of X-Men ’97 Episode 5.
While Magneto’s body wasn’t shown, Gambit’s fate seems to be confirmed. After Magneto’s explosion, Gambit pushed a rageful Rogue away before she flew into the incoming Sentinel energy beam. In an attempt to save her and everyone else, Gambit charged at the Sentinel. But before he could deliver his final blow, the Sentinel stabbed him with a tentacle, leaving him hanging after saying, “Mutant intruder neutralized.”
However, the Sentinal was wrong in its detection as Gambit smiled and uttered his final words, “The name’s Gambit, mon ami. Remember it.” Looking back at the Sentinel, he supercharged it through its tentacle and exploded it, making a huge sacrifice play. The episode ended with Rogue crying while holding his burnt lifeless body, saying, “Sugar, I can’t feel you.”
This is a comic book series so there are a few ways in which Gambit could be revived or resurrected. But for now, Rogue’s statement implied that he likely died for good. Moving on, his sacrifice could be used as a way to motivate other X-Men members, and possibly turn Magneto evil once again, if he survived.
