Black Salt Games and Story Kitchen are uniting to create a live-action adaptation of the former’s smash indie horror fishing game Dredge.
Dredge Catches a Movie Adaptation
The New Zealand-developed game, one of 2023’s best horror outings, sees players employed to fish the waters of a mysterious archipelago where strange things are afoot and afin on land and sea. As you build your boat up to fish more dangerous waters and explore more deadly places, an underlying cosmic horror mystery unfurls.
It’s not just the odd, weird fish and mumbling loon stuck on an island that should concern you, either. The night and the depths hold sinister secrets and lurking leviathans. What will you find on your excursions and will you ultimately regret finding it?
The game has received plenty of awards nominations since its release last March, which is impressive given the competition it faced in the general gaming space and the horror gaming space. ComingSoon reviewed the game and handed it an 8.5/10. Michael Leri wrote, ”Dredge is a remarkable blend of polar opposite genres that benefit greatly when mashed together like this.”
The film version has an official logline that reads, “Think ‘The Sixth Sense’ on the water. A grounded atmospheric cosmic horror blend of HP Lovecraft and Ernest Hemingway.”
Asked about the film adaptation, Black Salt Games’ Nadia Thorne, Joel Mason, Alex Ritchie and Michael Bastiaens wrote in a statement, “We are excited to partner with such an experienced studio team to bring the world we created to live action and ignite the imagination of audiences across the globe.”
A cosmic horror film with that setting and promise of unearthly creatures has plenty of potential, so seeing what Black Salt and Story Kitchen cook up will be interesting.
