Netflix’s upcoming documentary What Jennifer Did will re-examine the gruesome murder-for-hire case. The documentary primarily focuses on a woman named Jennifer Pan, who called 911 on November 8, 2010, and told the dispatcher that unknown assailants shot her parents. The culprits fled the scene after committing the slayings. As the investigations progressed, authorities discovered details about the crime and learned how Pan could have been responsible for the crime.
The documentary primarily focuses on the crime and also tells viewers about Jennifer Pan’s life. As per The Sun, he lied to her parents about her achievements and even showed them a fake diploma. In the midst of all this, Pan found herself falling in love with a man who had addiction problems and a criminal background. Subsequently, things started going downhill for Pan when her parents got to know about her lies. They decided not to let their daughter meet her boyfriend, Daniel Wong.
Afterward, the assailants shot both the parents and ran away from the house. Pan’s mother died on the spot, while her father sustained injuries. She called 911, and her father was taken to a hospital. He remained in a coma for three days, and after gaining consciousness, he recounted what happened to the investigators. After authorities questioned her three times, she eventually admitted to having hired the murderers. Police charged her on multiple counts, and the court subsequently found Jennifer Pan guilty.
The documentary What Jennifer Did will unravel the mystery behind the murder-for-hire case. It will premiere exclusively on Netflix on April 10.
Will there be a trial for Jennifer Pan in a murder-for-hire case?
The court found Jennifer Pan guilty of first-degree murder and convicted her. Before arresting Pan, authorities talked to her father and gathered information about that day. The Sun mentioned that Pan’s father told the investigators that he doubted her daughter because she was talking to one of the men “like a friend.” After Pan admitted that she contacted the men for killing her parents, authorities apprehended three people for the slayings.
In 2014, the trial began in the murder-for-hire case, and Jennifer Pan’s father testified in it. As per CBC, Pan’s father said that he opened his eyes and saw someone pointing a gun at his forehead. The assailant asked him to get out of bed and took him to the hallways.
Soon after he reached the hallway, he saw his daughter talking to one of the criminals. He told the court, “He talked to my daughter. I could not hear what was being said but they were speaking softly.” Apart from that, her father also shared how “upset” he was when he learned about Pan’s lies.
Pan also testified during the trial and noted that she had asked another man to kill her parents earlier. However, the plan didn’t work out because the man she contacted took the money and ran away, reported CBC. During the trial, prosecutors also claimed that Jennifer Pan stitched the plan to murder her parents and asked her boyfriend for some assistance.
As per another CBC report, the prosecution team also noted how the perpetrators attacked Pan’s parents. Subsequently, the court convicted her of first-degree murder.
No new trial date has been announced
On the other hand, all her accomplices—Wong, David Mylvaganam, Lenford Crawford, and Eric Carty—received life sentences, per The Sun. However, Carty pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiring to commit murder. As a result, he received 18 years in prison, with a possibility of parole after nine years.
In 2023, the Ontario court ordered a new trial in the case after the judge found that the jury didn’t get a chance to know about all the options. As a result, the judge labeled the conviction “not safe.”
As of now, no trial date has been decided.
